It (presumably) begins a slow burn romance between Audrey Sinclair, the Duchess of Fournier and a Bow Street Detective, Hugh Marsden. Their paths cross when Mr. Marsden finds Her Grace's husband, The Duke of Fournier covered in the blood of a murdered opera singer Ms. Lovejoy.

This is a fun read, an intriguing mystery, and cute start of a love story. I appreciated that its pace and brevity. I loved the subtlety of the paranormal fantasy that is woven into this story. Her Grace has a gift that allows her to see other's memories when she touches objects or people. A gift that she considers a curse and keeps a secret. For me, this 'light' fantasy in an otherwise grounded world was novel. I am interested to see if the paranormal aspects of the world will grow at all as the fantasy continues.

The unique circumstances surrounding the meet (not so) cute of Her Grace and Mr. Marsden and their differences in station made their growth in admiration for each other both humorous and endearing. I look forward to seeing where this series goes. Consider me hooked.
!--more--
What I liked about this book
Minor Spoiler for a reveal in the first 10% of the story !The plutonic love between the Duke and Duchess was really interesting to me. I love the dynamic of a married woman as an FMC that loves her husband, who loves her, but only as friends.!<
I am a sucker for sass and witty banter. There is plenty in here.
The way Audrey and Hugh have unique strengths as investigators that both compliment and conflict with each other. For example, Hugh is more careful about how he approaches things but he is also often too slow or too presumptive and misses things. Audrey can be rash but is a fast learner and her decisive action makes sure opportunities are not missed.
Audrey Sinclair is up there with Nevada Baylor and Olive Smith in heroines that just do it for me.

What I did not like about this book
At first I was listening to this book because it was available on Hoopla and an ebook version wasn't available on Hoopla or Libby. Which made it hard to follow the mystery.

Spoilers Review
details
summaryClick to Reveal Spoilers/summary
What I liked Spoilers
Mr. Marsden's honor and kind heart is shown not told. His efforts to protect the Duke and Duchesses secrets at the end of the story and his juxtaposition to all the members of the ton only looking out for themselves is a nice change from the super tall alphahole trope in much of romance.
The Duke being gay and how this is weaved into the mystery and Audrey's character was great. What I found fantastic though was how the danger of this reality refutes the 'glamorization' of regency London which I suspected from the genre. Man you have to be kidding me./hidden-text

sup1 One of the reasons I have not wanted to pick up historical romances (written in modern times, no issues reading 18th/19th century romance written at the time) is because both my parents marriage and my marriage would have been illegal (race mixing) in most of the Western World in the setting./sup
/details
This Book Reminded Me of:
Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews, fast pace mystery with a strong woman lead

Who should read this book?
I think fans of slow burn romantic mysteries will enjoy this one. I described it to my wife as regency Veronica Mars vibes but with a splash of paranormal.

Get the Book

Bonus Gush Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe Volume 1

Apparently Rachel Smythe wrote the Greek Mythology romantic comedy graphic novel I didn’t know I needed but now cannot imagine life without.

I read it in as close to 1 sitting you can have with gremlins running about on Boxing Day. The artwork is beautiful, the dialogue is witty, and the comedy lands in the way I imagine Homer’s better lines landed a few thousand years ago.

So good and I cannot believe I’ve never seen this mentioned here or on any of the sister.

Reed finds the perfect building for his bookshop in the fictional small town of Fairwick Falls, Pennsylvania where his best friend Luca loves with his 6 year old daughter, Annabelle (AB), and sister, Pearl. The story is dual POV and set in the fictional small town of Fairwick Falls, Pennsylvania. It is the fourth book in Elise Kennedy's Fairwick Falls series but can be read as a stand alone (I have not read books 1-3).

I found the way the story paces the relationship development between the main characters to be novelsup2/sup. As Pearl and Reed's "IRL" romance blossoms gradually, IMPOSSIBLYBOOKISH (Pearl) and HEMINGWAY_CANSUCKIT (Reed) are engaged in an anonymous digital romance that began a few months before the start of the story. The first half of the book has "fast-burn" spice and affection via Bookish and Hemingways anonymous messaging. I found the spice in Unexpectedly Bookish to be better than most romantic comedies and the quality of the characters and plot were merely at par so the early spice was a positive despite my preference for slow burns.

The book is on the longer end for the romcom genre (406 page kindle edition). I'll note much of that additional length is due to the quantity and length of the spicy scenes. Another reason though may be that the plot was trying to do a bit too much. Everything it does I welcome, if not actively seek, in my romcoms but it felt like too much was put into the "romance trope salad" instead of the "plot main course".

sup1 The relationship in this book is hetero and monogamous but Pearl is bisexual/sup
sup2 dad joke intended/sup

What I liked about this book

Both Pearl and Reed are shown having positive relationships with AB.
Pearl is a plus sized grumpy bad bitch goth. Reed is a glasses and sweater vest wearing neurodivergent-divergent friendly to all nerd.
The main characters both have relationships with side characters that matter to their character arcs and the overall plot.
MCs are in their late 20s, acting like it, and facing struggles related to being in their late 20s.
A townie in a townie bar says 'Yinz' 🖤💛.

What I did not like about this book

Aspects of the writing were a bit jarring to me, for example multiple times Pearl's thinks something like "I have such a praise kink".
Reed has the body of a typical MMC. It is not dwelled on but in a book that otherwise really tries to break the mold of the typical romcom MCs making Rees a normal height felt like a missed opportunity.

Spoilers Review
details
summaryClick to Review Spoilers/summary

What I liked Spoilers

Pearl gets "baby-fever horny" from seeing Reed interact with AB.
So many spicy things I have not seen enough of including mutual masturbation, dirty talk before and during, sassy teasing, cunnilingus from MMC POV, vibrators in the bedroom, and grinding through clothes / underwear.
An MMC that's a boss that realizes it is pretty fucked up to be attracted to your employee, let alone date them.

What I didn't like Spoilers

Pearl and Reed have a third act fight. In general I am not a big fan of the third act relationship drama but particularly in this story the circumstances felt like character assassination for both of them. Both have been so accommodating, supportive, and understanding of the other one up to that point it just feels like it's forced in there because "romcoms need a third act fight". At least it wasn't a contrived misunderstanding.
While I like the fact both Pearl and Reed have challenges and relationships to resolve in the third act neither one has particularly exciting or interesting resolutions. It gets real clunky with the fight and the primary character struggles for each of them had really only been told not shown up to that point. Pearl is a "fuck-up" but we've only seen her be really great at things. Reed's "never free to be himself only ever being the person his parents / people want him to be" but we have only seen him being himself in Fairwick Falls since the start of the book.

Tropes
As I said above this book is a bit of a "romance trope salad". Here is a list, I probably forgot some:
Pearl implied to have been a bit of a childhood bully to Reed
FMC younger sister of MMCs best friend
Enemies to friends to lovers
Forced Proximity
Roommates of convenience
Assistant & Boss
We are already in love anonymously online
MMC crush on FMC since childhood
Nobody gets me but you
They kissed me but do they actually like me?
Oh you thought that the roommates was forced proximity, hahaha now they're trapped in a closet
/details

This Book Reminded Me of
The C*ck Down the Block by Amy Award in the way it is a light cozy read.
The FMC and MMC dynamic in Maneater by Emily Antoinette.

Who should read this book?

People seeking cozy romcoms with plenty of spice.
People who enjoy the grumpy goth FMC with a soft heart paired with a the nerdy cinnamon roll MMC.

Elise Kennedy's Website

!--emailsub--
a href="https://remark.as/p/dadreadsromancebooks.online/dad-reviews-unexpectedly-bookish-by-elise-kennedy"Discuss.../a

sup#BookReviews #UnexpectedlyBookish #EliseKennedy #Books #Romance/sup]]>

I found the spice in Unexpectedly Bookish to be better than most romantic comedies and the quality of the characters and plot were merely at par so the early spice was a positive despite my preference for slow burns.

The book is on the longer end for the romcom genre (406 page kindle edition). I'll note much of that additional length is due to the quantity and length of the spicy scenes. Another reason though may be that the plot was trying to do a bit too much. Everything it does I welcome, if not actively seek, in my romcoms but it felt like too much was put into the “romance trope salad” instead of the “plot main course”.

1 The relationship in this book is hetero and monogamous but Pearl is bisexual
2 dad joke intended

What I liked about this book

Both Pearl and Reed are shown having positive relationships with AB.

Pearl is a plus sized grumpy bad bitch goth. Reed is a glasses and sweater vest wearing neurodivergent-divergent friendly to all nerd.

The main characters both have relationships with side characters that matter to their character arcs and the overall plot.

MCs are in their late 20s, acting like it, and facing struggles related to being in their late 20s.

A townie in a townie bar says 'Yinz' 🖤💛.

What I did not like about this book

Aspects of the writing were a bit jarring to me, for example multiple times Pearl's thinks something like “I have such a praise kink”.

Reed has the body of a typical MMC. It is not dwelled on but in a book that otherwise really tries to break the mold of the typical romcom MCs making Rees a normal height felt like a missed opportunity.

Spoilers Review

<details>

Click to Review Spoilers

What I liked Spoilers

Pearl gets “baby-fever horny” from seeing Reed interact with AB.

Both have been so accommodating, supportive, and understanding of the other one up to that point it just feels like it's forced in there because “romcoms need a third act fight”.

Pearl is a “fuck-up” but we've only seen her be really great at things. Reed's “never free to be himself only ever being the person his parents / people want him to be” but we have only seen him being himself in Fairwick Falls since the start of the book.

Tropes
As I said above this book is a bit of a “romance trope salad”. Here is a list, I probably forgot some:
– Pearl implied to have been a bit of a childhood bully to Reed
– FMC younger sister of MMCs best friend
– Enemies to friends to lovers
– Forced Proximity
– Roommates of convenience
– Assistant & Boss
– We are already in love anonymously online
– MMC crush on FMC since childhood
– Nobody gets me but you
– They kissed me but do they actually like me?
– Oh you thought that the roommates was forced proximity, hahaha now they're trapped in a closet

<![CDATA[Nat-20 Debut Check

There are rare reads for every romance fan when they pick up the right book at the right time. I am also a big fan of D&D and Romantasy. When I saw this debut novel was coming out, I felt like it was a book being written for me. I was expecting it to be a cute and campy read. It is cute as hell (and campy) but it is so much more. It encapsulates the pain associated with "success" in the American corporate rat race and simultaneously romanticizes the small-town American charm that I believe is eroding away.sup6/sup If you like D&D, CRCs, and sometimes ask yourself why you chose a successful career over creative fulfillment, then my advice is to put Roll for Romance at the very top of your to-be-read pile.

What I liked about this book

The romantic pacing is outstanding. I have never read a slow burn that captures falling in love so holistically.sup7/sup

Noah's personality radiates positive nerdy-mountain-boy masculinity. He has a bunch of aspects of some of the best friends I have ever had. He's deserving of Sadie.sup8/sup

The D&D narrative encapsulates what I love about TTRPGssup3/sup and the absurdity of D&D lore and tropes. Lenora Wood's passion for the game will be clear to anyone who reads it.sup9,10/sup

Even though this story is told from the Sadie/Jaylie perspective, by the end I understood Noah/Loren just as much.sup11/sup

I normally don't comment much on covers and I know "cartoon romcom" covers are hated by some but I think this is one of the most beautiful covers on my book shelf.

What I did not like about this book

Noah is, like most MMCs, amongst the top 15% of tallest men in the world. This is offset a little bit by Loren not being taller than Jaylie.

I would have loved this book even more if it were 30-50 pages longer to add a bit more depth (especially early on) to the D&D narrative. Overall, I love Lenora Woods' this format and hope she writes more books like this. This criticism is likely only a reflection on me being a man who loves CRCs and D&D so much.

Spoilers Review
details
summaryClick to reveal spoilers/summary
As I said at the top, this book came to me at the right time. I feel both of their pain so much.
/details

details
summaryClick to reveal (regular) spoilers/summary
One of the things about being a CRC fan in your late-20s and beyond is the life struggles of mid-20s and before are just different. Understandably, many CRCs are about the struggles of mid-20s and before. Once you reach late-20s and beyond, you can still relate to those stories because you remember that time of your life but its not the same as currently going through with it. Like Sadie before the story begins, I am lucky enough to have been successful in the traditional American "success path". Basically, I never worry about meeting the first three level's of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and rarely struggle with the fourth. Still corporate America is often a self-actualization destroying hellhole.sup12/sup My eyes watered at points of this story because it reminded me so much of what I have sacrificed in the decisions I have made. At the same time those same parts were uplifting because they reminded me that you can change paths when your heart decides that is what it wants.sup13/sup

Unlike Sadie, I grew up in the mountains camping and hiking constantly. Cliff jumping by waterfalls and riding a bike across my small-town. This book encapsulates the wonders of the summers of my youth in a painfully nostalgic way. When I first started the story I was a little bit off put on the failure to address the realities of what has happened to rural America charm over the last decade. Then as the book continued I realized that Lenora Woods subtly addressing it. There were little tiny pin-pricks that lasted less than a paragraph. Upon reflection, this is great fucking writing full of wisdom. The reality is some people suck. Sometimes you will have to interact with those people, but you can surrounded yourself with people who don't. You can build your community anywhere.

What I liked Spoilers

"Everything goes still. The leaves in the trees hush their rustling, and the fireflies are suspended in midair. Our mingling breaths freeze in the narrow space between us. Words unspoken catch in the back of my throat, and I don't know what to say next." I was transported to this moment and I melted.
There are points in the book where Noah and Sadie role play downtime moments between Loren and Jaylie via text. It's so cute and also I love the earnest representation of something so nerdy. This book is not ashamed of what it is.
(Fairly large D&D narrative spoiler) There is 1 scene that is not from Sadie/Jaylie's perspective. It is from Loren's when Jaylie falls in battle. Two things about this scene: 1) Liam (Sadie's best friend and the DM of the campaign) sends Sadie away from the table as the rest of the party discusses resolving Jaylie's death. I love this...with player permission I am stealing it for my tables. 2) What a brilliant way to switch perspectives just for a moment around the middle of the story. Give us just a glimpse of Noah/Loren's feelings directly.
The romantic conflict in the frame narrative revolves around making decisions about what Noah and Sadie want for their futures. There love only ever moves forward, there is no stupid misunderstanding or contrived conflict. Its there love and relationship vs external realities.

What I didn't like Spoilers

It would have been cool to see a bit more about the D&D party leveling up and progressing.
/details

Note: Roll for Romance contains explicit sexual scenes between consenting adults but i have chosen to keep this review #SFW.

This Book Reminded Me of
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood for its the slow burn and payoff.
The vibe of my favorite Actual Play podcast, Not Another D&D Podcast, and its after-show, The Short Rest, which are hosted by Brian Murphy, Emily Axford, Jake Hurwitz and Caldwell Tanner.

Who should read this book?

If you like CRCs and D&D I cannot reccomend this book enough. If you are in your late 20s or beyond and often wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze you'll probably find something to like here. If your a Fantasy Romance fan interested in giving contemporary romance a try (or vice versa) this might be a good way to "take a small bite to see if its for you".

Get the book

sup1/sup The quantity of spice in Roll for Romance is low. I realize that spice/steam level sometimes means an objective measure of the frequency and explicitness of sexy time scenes (i.e. smut). My "Steam Heat Level" ratings have always been about my subjective opinion on the quality of the both the sexual tension (e.g. yearning, angst) and sexual payoff. From now on, in my reviews, I am going to use the following to help distinguish these two related but different aspects of romance books. Spice = smut, because spice feels hot once it touches your tongue; Steam = smut + tension, because steam feels hot if you're close to it. Conveniently, this will not make my romance.io spice ratings contradict with my written reviews when cross published there.

sup2/sup An hour or so outside of Austin.

sup3/sup D&D (or DnD) is an acronym for Dungeons and Dragons, the most popular and well known Table Top Role Playing Game or TTRPG. D&D at its core is a form of collaborative improvised story telling that utilizes dice rolling and other table top game elements. In D&D most players role-play and control a single character called a player character. The player-charters are the protagonists of the story being told (usually allies). One player is the dungeon (game) master or "DM" ("GM") and controls the rest of the world (other characters, wild animals, weather, etc.).

sup4/sup I interrupted the Romantasy narrative as Sadie's imagination of the world being built in the D&D campaign so the prespective never really switches from Sadie's 1st person even though the writing shifts to third-person limited in the Romantasy narrative. The CRC frame narrative is probably 60-70% of the total narrative. The Romantasy narrative is on the extreme-end of the narrative-play side of the 'actual-play to narrative-play spectrum'. Which is a nerdy way of saying all game mechanics take place "off-screen".

sup5/sup Yes D&D fans...the MMC is a horny bard...and I'm here for it.

sup6/sup I grew up in a small town. Most of my adult life has been spent in cities working in large corporations.

sup7/sup To put this differently, I felt the growth of emotional connection and friendship between Noah and Sadie (and as extensions of them Loren and Jaylie) was in harmony with the sexual tension.

sup8/sup In contrast to the MMC in my last review 🙄.

sup9/sup As a DM, I imagine Lenora Woods is blessing at every table she sits at.

sup10/sup If you're expecting perfect representation of forgotten realms canon and 5e mechanics and will go complain somewhere if the wrong spell component is described for the casting of lightning bolt don't sup(Also, why are you like this?)

sup11/sup I love The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood but one of the only things I do not like about it is the lack of dual perspective. If it delivered Adam's feelings through Olive's perspective to the level Roll for Romance does with Noah/Loren through Sadie/Jaylie it would probably still be my top CRC read this year.

details
summaryClick to Reveal footnotes for spoilers/summary
sup12/sup I understand this is an upper-middle-class+ 1st world problem.

sup13/sup Related, what painting is for Sadie is what I have realized writing is for me. I wanted to write fantasy novels for most of my adolescence. It wasn't until my Junior year of high-school when I decided to pursue a more traditional American "success path".
/details

!--emailsub--
a href="https://remark.as/p/dadreadsromancebooks.online/dad-reviews-roll-for-romance-by-lenora-woods"Discuss.../a

sup#BookReviews #RollForRomance #LenoraWoods #Books/sup]]>

Note: Roll for Romance contains explicit sexual scenes between consenting adults but i have chosen to keep this review #SFW.

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood for its the slow burn and payoff.

Who should read this book?

If you like CRCs and D&D I cannot reccomend this book enough. If you are in your late 20s or beyond and often wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze you'll probably find something to like here. If your a Fantasy Romance fan interested in giving contemporary romance a try (or vice versa) this might be a good way to “take a small bite to see if its for you”.

Get the book

1 The quantity of spice in Roll for Romance is low. I realize that spice/steam level sometimes means an objective measure of the frequency and explicitness of sexy time scenes (i.e. smut). My “Steam Heat Level” ratings have always been about my subjective opinion on the quality of the both the sexual tension (e.g. yearning, angst) and sexual payoff.

2 An hour or so outside of Austin.

3 D&D (or DnD) is an acronym for Dungeons and Dragons, the most popular and well known Table Top Role Playing Game or TTRPG. D&D at its core is a form of collaborative improvised story telling that utilizes dice rolling and other table top game elements. In D&D most players role-play and control a single character called a player character. The player-charters are the protagonists of the story being told (usually allies). One player is the dungeon (game) master or “DM” (“GM”) and controls the rest of the world (other characters, wild animals, weather, etc.).

4 I interrupted the Romantasy narrative as Sadie's imagination of the world being built in the D&D campaign so the prespective never really switches from Sadie's 1st person even though the writing shifts to third-person limited in the Romantasy narrative. The CRC frame narrative is probably 60-70% of the total narrative. The Romantasy narrative is on the extreme-end of the narrative-play side of the 'actual-play to narrative-play spectrum'. Which is a nerdy way of saying all game mechanics take place “off-screen”.

5 Yes D&D fans...the MMC is a horny bard...and I'm here for it.

6 I grew up in a small town. Most of my adult life has been spent in cities working in large corporations.

7 To put this differently, I felt the growth of emotional connection and friendship between Noah and Sadie (and as extensions of them Loren and Jaylie) was in harmony with the sexual tension.

8 In contrast to the MMC in my last review 🙄.

9 As a DM, I imagine Lenora Woods is blessing at every table she sits at.

10 If you're expecting perfect representation of forgotten realms canon and 5e mechanics and will go complain somewhere if the wrong spell component is described for the casting of lightning bolt don't (Also, why are you like this?)

11 I love The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood but one of the only things I do not like about it is the lack of dual perspective. If it delivered Adam's feelings through Olive's perspective to the level Roll for Romance does with Noah/Loren through Sadie/Jaylie it would probably still be my top CRC read this year.

<details>

Click to Reveal footnotes for spoilers

12 I understand this is an upper-middle-class+ 1st world problem.

13 Related, what painting is for Sadie is what I have realized writing is for me. I wanted to write fantasy novels for most of my adolescence. It wasn't until my Junior year of high-school when I decided to pursue a more traditional American “success path”.

Day. Ever. Originally published in 2013, it is Penny Reid’s debut novel and the first story in the Chicago, Illinois set Knitting in the Citysup4/sup series. Janie’s Worst. Day. Ever. Begins with finding an unfamiliar empty condom wrapper in her boyfriend'ssup5/sup jeans and ends with security escorting her out of the office building where she is was an accountant.

The security guard that escorts her out is Sir Handsome McHotpants, at least as far as she and her friend (and now former) colleague are concerned. A few days later, Janie learns three things while out on the town with her best friend:
Sir Handsome McHotpants also works security at a night club.
Most people call him Quinn Sullivan.
His company has a business team, and that business team is hiring an accountant.
Janie, who I read as ADHD coded, struggles to put some obvious things together throughout the story, the first of these being that she is Lady Beautiful O'SexySkirt in Sir McHotpants eyes.

I really loved Janie as a protagonist. I have never read an inner dialogue that I identified with as much as Janiesup6/sup. She is kind, brilliant, spacey, understanding, competent and funny. She is also tall, which is a much better match for a 6' something MMC than most FMCssup7/sup.

Quinn Sullivan is fine, but not my cup of tea. I never found myself caring about Quinn. I found his quiet, brooding, and bossy demeanor boring and stereotypical. His main redeeming quality for me was he made Janie happy.

As is to be expected for a CRC the overall tone of the story is light-hearted, however; it had just the right amount of conflict and mystery to keep me paging turning for more than an HEA fix. I also appreciated Janie's career success and other relationships remaining key pIot drivers past the first act. Overall, Neanderthal Seeks Human finds its way to a satisfying tale of love, growth, and understanding.

What I liked about this book

Janie's inner dialogue. I get that she is there as a foil to Janie but her character came off as unnecessarily mean spirited to 'traditionally attractive' woman in the work place. It is never even brought up as a middle ground from any of the people in her life asking her to get one.
There are multiple meaningful conversations that take place between the MCs off screen, given how few words we get out of Quinn the entire book I would have liked to have seen how those played out.

Spoilers Review

What I liked Spoilers
details
summaryClick to reveal spoilers/summary

There is a final confrontation in which three skinhead gang members end up at knitting night to try and kidnap Janie. Our FMCsup3/sup is Frankie, a practicing sexologist and the host of the popular All Access Podcast where she discusses (among other accessibility topics) accessible sex. When the All Access Podcast is nominated in multiple categories for the prestigious "Poddie Awards", Frankie and her producer decide to tackle one of their most interesting listener questions: accessible shibari.

There is a small problem with their brilliant plan to boost ratings ahead of the final award decision: despite Frankie's wealth of professional and personal experience with accessible sex (Frankie uses a wheelchair), bondage and shibari are a blind spot for her. Luckily for Frankie, our MMCsup3/sup Jay just so happens to live in the same small-town as her and teach a class on accessible shibari. Frankie gets in touch with Jay, who invites her to his upcoming class. When this professional arrangement leads to mutual attraction, they hit a bit of a snag: Frankie doesn't do friends-with-benefits. Jay doesn't do relationships. Uh-oh, they may knot be each other's types...

This book grew on me as I read it. My impression was closer to a 3/5 overall for the first third. It is by no means a slow burnsup4/sup and the plot moves from one minor conflict to the next throughout two-thirds of the book. My taste is generally for a bit more suspense in the rising action. The humor is decent, but I have read funnier. What sealed the extra 💜 is how sweet Frankie and Jay's relationship is portrayed. I am a sucker for over-the-top displays of affection, and there were a couple here that really did it for me.

Many romcoms create the aforementioned suspense through failure of communication between the MCssup5/sup, in Knot My Type most disagreements or misunderstandings between Frankie and Jay are addressed immediately, and often in a very sweet manner. It was a welcome trade-off, because I find contrived suspense to be even worse than low suspense. I also enjoyed that there was early spice and late spice, but the middle of the book really focused on the relationship and falling in love.sup6/sup

What I liked about this book

Frankie and Jay's friends get enough "screen time" that we get a sense of who they are and it furthers the characterization of Frankie and Jay. Impressive enough given the length of the book, but it goes one step further in that we see these characters enough to have them interact with the "other" protagonist too. I love a romcom with good side characters.
Lots of Positive Masculinity.
Some solid yearning from our MCs.
As far as I could tell not a single character's skin color is described. FMC has pink (therefore died) hair. MMC may have been described as a brunette but overall it seemed like the book was written to allow for the reader to imagine there own diversity amongst the characters. I do not know that I have ever read a book that did this before. I am sure there is a way to attempt this poorly but I felt like it was done well here.

What I did not like about this book

I like slice of life but this was almost too much of a slice of life story. It could be that I read it after a fairly intense dark fantasy story but it just seemed plot light.
The first couple pages with the setting exposition felt a little...unnatural? Maybe it is cultural difference U.S.A small-town vs Australia small-town. It could also just be the circles of people I know but the premise is that a bunch of people grew up in a small-town, left for college, and then all came back. Having grown up in a small-town in America nearly nobody who goes to a decent college and actually finishes comes back. It was then made more strange to me because all of Frankie's friends had like some entrepreneurial business, something I also do not associate with people who still live in the small-town I grew up in. This is a bit nit-picky but I also think the exposition of it felt very telling and not showing which is ironic because overall this book did a FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC job of showing and not telling. I guess stories and settings can be hard to start. 🤷

Spoilers Review
details
summaryClick to reveal spoilers/summary
Let me further explain my issues with the plot / conflict in this book. There are multiple threads of what could be big plot points early on. Frankie is trying to win the Poddie. Frankie may get a T.V. offer that requires her to move to New York (i.e. halfway around the world). Jay doesn't do dating (literally the title premise)?. Jay just bought a mess of a house that is a fixer-upper. Jay's shibari skills are being used to boost Frankie's podcast. Its both too much and not enough. Then ultimately the actual conflict is Jay's trauma from his Ex which is barely mentioned until she shows up at the beginning of the third act. By the time she causes the first relationship conflict between Frankie and Jay that is not resolved in the same conversation it arises in the book has no running room left so we still only have 1 scene between problem that needs to be solved and solving the problem. Do not get me wrong I liked this book (and the grovel scene is lovely) but why couldn't there have been like a mutual thing they were tackling together? Expand on the accessible shibari thing maybe Frankie's listener needs additonal help. Have Frankie and Jay continue to renovate the house and run into challenges. Have Frankie get the t.v. midway into the book and they need to navigate that. Something! The only reason I am harping on this is because this book had everything else to earn itself five purple hearts.

On a happier note, there is a very early scene (second scene between Jay and Frankie) that is Jay teaching his shibari class with Frankie as the model.
Knot My Type is a Contemporary Romantic Comedy set in small-town Australia. Our FMC3 is Frankie, a practicing sexologist and the host of the popular All Access Podcast where she discusses (among other accessibility topics) accessible sex. When the All Access Podcast is nominated in multiple categories for the prestigious “Poddie Awards”, Frankie and her producer decide to tackle one of their most interesting listener questions: accessible shibari.

There is a small problem with their brilliant plan to boost ratings ahead of the final award decision: despite Frankie's wealth of professional and personal experience with accessible sex (Frankie uses a wheelchair), bondage and shibari are a blind spot for her. Luckily for Frankie, our MMC3 Jay just so happens to live in the same small-town as her and teach a class on accessible shibari.

It is by no means a slow burn4 and the plot moves from one minor conflict to the next throughout two-thirds of the book.

Many romcoms create the aforementioned suspense through failure of communication between the MCs5, in Knot My Type most disagreements or misunderstandings between Frankie and Jay are addressed immediately, and often in a very sweet manner. It was a welcome trade-off, because I find contrived suspense to be even worse than low suspense. I also enjoyed that there was early spice and late spice, but the middle of the book really focused on the relationship and falling in love.6
